Where Dogs are in Focus

Dogless in DC

Once again, the real job (i.e., the one I get paid to do) took me to the nation’s capital for a business trip.  I rarely travel without my dogs.  In fact, the only time I travel without my dogs is on these business trips.  While dog-friendly accommodations are available, I know the dogs wouldn’t be happy holed up in a hotel room all day while I’m at the office taking care of business.

During the drive down, traveling on turnpikes and busy Interstate highways, I saw only one dog who had stopped with her person at a rest stop.  One dog in 500 miles – that’s just not enough dog for me!  I arrived in DC feeling dog-deprived and yearning for some canine company.

Luckily, my colleague (and fellow dog lover) lives in the same neighborhood as my hotel, and she filled my need for a doggie-fix by bringing her dog Bo with her for our dinner date.  We found a restaurant with outdoor seating that happily welcomed Bo and brought him a nice cool bowl of water.

Isn’t he adorable?

Dogs in cars

I often capture photos of dogs waiting in cars while their owners are inside the grocery store.  This is because I’m always looking for dogs everywhere I go (and I go to the grocery store a lot).  It is now a habit of mine to circle the grocery store parking lot before parking, in hopes of finding a car with a dog inside that I can photograph.  I’ve learned to look and listen for the clues – the cracked window and the sound of barking.  Another big clue is lots of activity inside of a car. Do you actually think your dog sits still while you’re inside? Think again!

I thought it would be fun to share a collection of the photos I’ve captured of dogs in cars – most have been featured here or on my Facebook page before – but this is the first time I’ve pulled them all together as a collection. It always puts a smile on my face when I spot a dog in car, out for an everyday adventure with their person.  I hope these photos put a smile on your face too!

German Shepherd Dog

Today’s example of Photoshop fun features a German Shepherd Dog I met a few weeks ago.  While I’ve never owned a GSD, I am a huge fan of the breed, and have had several GSD’s in my life through friends.

Sage was a GSD that lived next door to us in New Mexico.  He was a gentle old soul, and we got attached to him after dog sitting him while his people were on vacation.  He was a senior dog and we were saddened to learn of his passing after we moved away.  Rio belonged to another friend and served as a shop dog in her store which we frequented.  He would eagerly greet us upon our arrival and he would stick close by me throughout our visit.  Rio was also a senior dog and when he passed it broke our hearts.  Soon after, a young GSD named Theo took over Rio’s duty as shop dog, and also stole our hearts.  Sage, Rio and Theo all had something in common – they were big strong dogs who were also gentle and very loving – sounds like a typical GSD to me!

Of course, with their intelligence and strength, German Shepherd Dogs have served throughout history as working dogs and are well known for their roles as Police K9′s and Military Working Dogs (MWD’s).  I wanted to recognize those roles in this piece, as well as their role as companion and family dogs.

Country Hound

Look at this pretty girl!  I saw her on the side of a winding country road yesterday.  I had seen her there once before, but by the time I circled back to her she was gone.  This time, I was able to catch her with my camera.  I’m calling her Country Hound because she is obviously a hound (look at those ears!) and she is living the free-roaming life of a country dog.

The photos don’t even begin to express the eagerness in her eyes.  Some dogs sound the alarms when I stop to photograph them. But others, like Country Hound, seem to enjoy being photographed.  She spotted me and just gazed at me with those sweet brown eyes while I took her photo.  Hopefully, I’ll see her out and about again another day.

A dog at the door

The dog in this photo was tied up in front of her house with another dog while her Person was busy with housework inside.  I can understand the need to put the dogs outside when doing housework – my dogs try to attack my vacuum cleaner and it seems counter productive to vacuum up dog fur while the dogs are inside shedding even more fur!  But these dogs were not happy about waiting outside and seemed very eager to be let back in the house.

When inside, dogs want to be outside, and will whimper at the door until you give in to their wishes.  But put them outside while you are inside, and they want to be inside again.  The quote from Ogden Nash sums it up best – “A door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of.”

This photo did not come easily.  I have been hoping for a photo where I could use the Ogden Nash quote and have been keeping my eyes peeled for a dog in a doorway.  Of course, when you are looking for something specific, it somehow becomes harder to find.  By the time I noticed this dog, I had already passed her and had to turn around.  I would have to circle my way back through a series of turns and I was sure the dog would be gone by the time I made it back to her.

To save time, I decided to get my camera ready while stopped at a stop sign, only to find out my camera battery was dead!  Luckily, my Photography Assistant/IT Guy/Technical Guru/Husband has taught me well, and now I always have a fully charged back-up battery with me. I quickly switched the battery out and made my way to the dog – she was still there and making a fuss at the door in hopes of being let in.  I was pleased to capture a fleeting moment of calm when she turned to look at me.

Dog lovers, what do your dogs do when they are on the wrong side of the door?  And to my canine readers, what’s the deal with you dogs and doors?

Artsy Boxers

On Fridays, I try to feature photos that have gotten some extra love in Photoshop.  If you’ve been following me for a while, you may recognize the dogs in this photo which was taken several years ago.  You can see the original post and photo HERE.  It is probably among my top five dog photo opps of all time – after all, what are the odds of stumbling upon a pair of beautiful boxers in such a hilarious pose?!    And for those of you who are wondering – yes, this was a 100% spontaneous and candid shot. I did not know these dogs, I did not pose these dogs like this, and no one was bribing them with treats to pose like this for me. I just happened upon them, quickly got over my disbelief, slammed on the brakes, pulled over and started shooting.

I was always content with the photo just the way it was – the pose was so priceless, I didn’t think it needed any additional enhancements.  But as I was looking for an image to display on my home page, I realized how special this photo was to my work.  It sparked something inside me.  It made me hungry for more dog photo opps and kept me out there looking every day for more dogs to photograph.  It is also among the first of the photos that I stopped traffic to take, and those early traffic-stoppers helped me to get over my intimidation of taking spontaneous photos in public.

I wanted to use an image that truly captured the essence of what I do as a photographer, and this “Pair of Boxers” photo fit the bill.  Now, I just needed to give it some artsy touches, so it could really shine as the cover photo for the Doggone Artsy website.  The work in Photoshop included tweaking the lights and darks a bit, adding some textures and ornamental layers, and then the text.

Every time I’m in the area, I drive by their house to see if the boxers are there.  It’s been a while since I’ve seen them, but I plan to spend quite a bit of time in their neighborhood over the summer months as it is a goldmine for dog photo opps.  Hopefully, I’ll capture them again!

Sunset Dog

Today’s dog was captured on the same sunset drive that I wrote about last week when I stumbled upon Red Alert Dog.  I just loved the way the light from the setting sun created a halo-like glow around him.  I am calling him Sunset Dog.  He lives with another dog that looks a lot like him, but I was unable to photograph the other dog because he was partially out of view at the time.  Red Alert Dog lives nearby so of course I will be going back to look for all of them again.

If you were subscribing to my blog at http://lauriebartolo.com, PLEASE take a moment to subscribe to this blog as this will now be where I post all of my photos and stories from the Dog Photo Trail.  For those of you who have already subscribed here, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!  It means so much to me to have you along with me on the Dog Photo Trail!
